Retroreflective materials, such as 3M™ Cube Corner Reflectors, are used in a variety of photoelectric systems. The interruption of a beam of light can be used to trigger an action, such as setting off an alarm, shutting down potentially hazardous machinery, or simply opening a door.

Bar codes printed on 3M retroreflective labeling materials increase the range of bar code readers from the standard six-inch maximum to nearly six feet without increasing the power of the bar code reader. Even hard-to-reach codes can be easily scanned from the ground.
